Hi, im looking to build a small garden railway in my garden. Can anybody recommend any good websites and shops?

I'm a absolutle beginner so any advice would be appreciated.Help and advice on building a Garden Railway !?
There is a video/DVD out about how to build a garden railway. It's all the programmes from a TV series shown on the Discovery channel two or three years back and it's available from a lot of places now - it's only drawback is the presenter - an ex Northern line driver who thinks he's good at presenting - and he's NOT ! ! !

A site or two to try:

Good luck with your new hobby. Its a lot of fun
You might like to try 'Railway Modeller' (for the British scene) or 'Continental Modeller' (for railways abroad), both published in the UK by Peco, who also make track and accessories for various model railway gauges.

Articles on indoor %26amp; outdoor railways in all the smaller gauges, plenty of trade ads (many of them with websites) and private ads, product reviews, etc.

They also do booklets on all aspects of model railways including garden lines. Plus there are plenty of books, DVD's etc. from other publishers on the subject.

It's also a good idea to join a railfans' club if you can, plenty of fellow enthusiasts to share experience and info.

Btw. I just put, 'garden model railways' into the Yahoo! search engine and got over 2,000,000 hits! Happy browsing!

Any advice on building my own wooden hammock stand?

I don't want to shell out $100 for the DIY steel brackets. I intend to use the basic \__/ shaped design made with 4x4's, but want to make sure the joints are strong enough. Any advice? (preferably advice from woodworkers or people who have done this before)

Thanks!!Any advice on building my own wooden hammock stand?
I'd suggest using 6';x6'; posts rather than 4';x4'; and they should be 10' or longer, Post-Hole Dig aprox. 4' deep and set them in concrete completely to ground surface. (aprox. #4 - 60lb. bags) Tip: When digging a post hole= Tighter the Hole, Stronger the Pole, so keep the same dia. all the way down if possible. Allow the crete to cure at least 24 hrs.And good luckAny advice on building my own wooden hammock stand?
One way is to glue and nail 3/4'; exterior plywood on either side of the joint (should extend at least 8'; beyond joint). Make sure your ';feet'; extend out at least 12'; to 18'; beyond centerline so the hammock won't tip over. A very beautiful stand is made by laminating bent 1/2'; boards into a graceful arch but you need to know about steaming wood and use a very good exterior glue with lots of clamps.

if your going to play live drums, insulate the walls with dense foam.

If your going to mainly record and use an electronic kit, you don't have to do much except build a relatively sound proof vocal booth.I'm building a music studio. What advice can I give my architect at this early stage?
Maybe go on a tour of some local studios for some ideas - they usually have blueprints available to look at as well. I'm sure your local library has some books on studios as well. She's the architect - she should be able to do the research.
round is best with low ceilings....... if you've had a chance to make it to sun studios, the most simple design and best recording studio around. if elvis was around you could ask.....guess not. sorry. but the the perforated ceiling tiles seem to have alot to do with the great sound that comes from there.

Anyone have any advice on building a concrete yard pond?

I want to build a concrete yard pond, kidney shaped, and have seen ponds done with no plastic liners. I have seen people use river rock and belgiun blocks then cemented them together, placing bottom stones first, cementing them in , then adding side stones, cementing etc... My question is has anyone done this and how deep does it need to be to prevent solid freezing in winter. I live in Pittsburgh, Pa. Any advice would be appreciated, Thanks!!Anyone have any advice on building a concrete yard pond?
I cant give you advice about building the concrete pond but I have watched one being made

I can tell you that once the concrete is dry you will need to fill and empty the pond several times so as to get rid of the lime or whatever, it's poisonous to the fishAnyone have any advice on building a concrete yard pond?
My neighbor has a very nice pond in Wisconsin. She made her's five feet deep. She keeps fish in it year 'round. She also has a water source at the bottom. She used a liner and covered it with rocks. She has never replaced the liner and the pond has been there for 7 years. Hope this helps.
There are several considerations when planning a concrete pond.

Will you have fish?

If so, it takes quite awhile for the lime to leach out of the cured cement before you can add your fish. Lime will kill your fish.

Does the ground freeze in the winter?

If so, a concrete form would be more likely to crack and thus cause you to patch the following soring, as well as loosing any fish and plants you may have had.

Safety regarding children falling in?

Most area have bylaws regarding water features that may provide a drowning risk for children and you would want to check in to that.

Your plan to cement rocks is probably not a great one as water has nack of finding a crack.

So you would need to use forms to pour the concrete, and rebar ( need rebar to reinforce the sides ) and so on ... .... that adds up quickly and in the end it is never a sure thing that it will hold water.

Our first pond was concrete and the family had a blast building it but it cracked the first winter.

We have used an old water bed liners... very effective but shallow - great for a bog garden.

We have tried thick plastic - not good - it floats if water gets under it and ttears easily.

We've had preformed ponds and they are hard to dig a matching hole to fit them and really hard to make look natural.

Our best effort to date is the heavy pond liner and that is what I would save my money up for if I was you.

Get the kids to help contribute $$ to a special container with the promise of fish, plant and sailing boats. Use a graph and make it a family challenge / goal.

Have fun, ponds are great!
I first did a concrete one and it was too much work and expense. They sell the liners and even the pre-formed plastic ones now cheaply. I have since used plastic pre-formed for years and they last (I have two) You need at least 18 inches to keep from totally freezing, If you are going to have fish, you can put an inexpensive heating element in the freezing months.

  • We are building a house and need advice for the 2nd floor covered porch decking.?

We needs some ideas of what to use for the decking on a second floor porch. We need something that won't leak. Any ideas? We are building a house and need advice for the 2nd floor covered porch decking.?
It depends on your location if it freezes. You need to take appropriate water proofing measures. a standard Joist and plywood floor are a good start. you need to have appropriate flashings at corners and edges. (I am assuming you have live able space under the deck.) then you can do a tile mud bed or use dura rock to get slope so the water will run off correctly. Next install a water proofing membrane. Latticrete makes a good roll on product. Use several coats and the backing fabric specified by the manufacturer (Latticrete) on the last coat while it is wet sprinkle it with sand. This gives the tile mastic something to adhere too. install tile and grout as usual.

Contact me if I can offer any other clarification on this. Rolsenn2003@yahoo.comWe are building a house and need advice for the 2nd floor covered porch decking.?
Lay a plywood (particle board) deck then cover that with 30# felt capped with 90# roofing sheet. It the least expensive way but watch for wear in the high traffic areas.
laying down timber decking, then masonite and then some tiles, or lino will seal the floor against leaking.

Anyone have advice for building credit?

I am 22 with no credit history. The only negative things on my credit report are about $2500 worth of medical debt and 3 paid items (a cell phone bill, electricity bill, etc, mistakes made as a youngster). I have never tried to finance anything but was fortunate enough to inherit a home. I will be grateful for any available advice on how to start building some credit. Thank you.Anyone have advice for building credit?
Ask your financial institution if they offer something along the lines of a Shared (Savings) Secured Loan.

Basically this will open up a loan in your name and use your savings as collateral. The institution will cut you a check for the amount (we can use $1000 as an example) and you can simply place that money into your account and use it to make payments. Your payments will be recorded and help you begin to grow your first lines of credit. After wards you'll be able to take out loans for things you actually need (i.e. furniture, remodeling, vehicles, etc) and when making payments on those, your credit score will improve.

Just be sure you actually make your payments.Anyone have advice for building credit?
Get a credit card from local bank and pay it in time. You also can use this service to avoid common mistakes while buiding credit and pre-estimate future scores for different scenarios of payments - freecreditreport.hotusa.org
If you have $500 in a savings account, convert into a secure credit card. Make sure they belong to the credit bureaus.
try getting a cc from the place where you bank. charge a little and pay it off. try not carrying a balance on your cc for too long. easy enough.

What is the best advice about building a house...?

My husband and I own a house now, but its only 1 bedroom and we have a daughter who needs her own room now...shes 3, we are planning on buying property and we are thinking about buying it plus getting a little extra to get a well and electric put on the property and then paying that off first and THEN start building a house, but should we get a little extra and build a small living quarters in a shop/garage?!? I dont know what to do?!? Help please tell me what money advice you have on this subject bc i want to do it the smartest way possible w/o going into to much debt... okay thanks, any advice will be helpfulWhat is the best advice about building a house...?
Okay, first of all, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO GET A LOAN LIKE THIS. Rural land /raw land loans are much harder to get becuase the market is not the same as it is for homes-- there are simply less buyers and land sits on the market for longer periods of time- even well priced pieces. its more of a risk for the lender.

99% of banks will require 10-20% down on vacant land. They're definitely not going to laon 100% and ten give you more money for development.

What you want to do is an all in one construction laon that would cover the land, development, and the house. THESE loans are easier to get because in the end there is a house on them.

Open up some of those free real estate for sale magazines or classified ads. There should be advertisements for ';Homes built on your lot starting at $40 sq ft!!'; Go visit several of these and price out reasonalbe floor palns, and ask for their list of banks/lenders that they work through.

Then go to the banks and get preapproved and find out your dollar amount.

A construction loan works fairly simiple- they give you 6 months to a year for the purchase of the property, development and building. During the time its being worked on, you pay interest only on the portion that has been paid out-- not the end dollar amount.

They will perform an appraisal that will tell you what your house will be worth when its done being built, and thats what they base the laon off of. So you'l know before its built if you're coming out ahead.

Any advice or information on building a treehouse?

I am thinking of putting a treehouse in a large walnut tree. In addition to any building tips, I want to know whether there are any problems due to the branches swaying in the wind-as the force of this movement would be greatly amplified at nearer the trunk, could this crush the treehouse? How could this be overcome? Also, how could the platform be fixed into the tree-cables, coach screws etc? The tree is a large walnut with about 5 thick branches that spread out from the base of the trunk.Any advice or information on building a treehouse?

    Hi Steve. in NC

No offense and not knowing at all where you are; IE: sme wind blown coast line; etc. You might be overthinking this just a bit.

I've built and hung out in my share of Tree Houses, in my time; and maybe I'm smokin too much wacky stuff, but it seems to me; the higher one builds;the more direct the forces influence the construction. That said however; what fun might it be to build a Tree House 3 feet off the ground.

Certainly one would hope that the tree itself and it's branches are substantial enough to support the structure, and a party of 12 in hanging out.

I might take hints from construction that includes Hurricane/Earthquake fittings/supports/ attachments etc. and design something that allows for float; sway; yaw; pitch; etc.

Actually if I had that kind of worry however; I might just design something at ground level and leave the tree to keep producing fruit and lumber.

The link Steve offers is a good one. I'd give him the 10.

If you are in the uk you may need planning permission. Might be useful to check with your local authority.
No offence but if you're not sure what you are doing wouldn't it be wiser to get someone who does? If you insist on doing it yourself try to get advice from someone (in real life) who has already built at least one.

Any set-building advice? I'm hoping to add retractable wheels to a wooden phone-box...?

We've built a full-size, wooden replica of a red phone-box Three sides only, one of which includes the door), and want to make it easily movable. As people will be going in and out, we want it to be stable when it is stationary. How could we add wheels, and still maintain stability? Is there any device commercially available in the UK (eg for moving furniture) that we could use?Any set-building advice? I'm hoping to add retractable wheels to a wooden phone-box...?
You can get rollers with brakes on the little wheels. They are used for moving washing machines etc in and out of the fitmets. I think B%26amp;Q may do them but not sure.Any set-building advice? I'm hoping to add retractable wheels to a wooden phone-box...?
You could try taking the wheels off the phone box itself and fastening it to a platform with wheels on it. Then if you lay small tracks so that the wheels don't start going every which-a-way, you could push the platform onto the stage when needed and retract it when the scene is over. We did this in a very successful production of La Cage aux Folles. Depending on the production, you could also put the phone box on a turntable. Again, this would have wheels on it but bolted through the floor at the center and the phone box would be fastened to the platform of the turntable. Again, successfully done in Little Shop of Horrors

Advice on building muscle and making gains?

I have been training for around about 6 months now and I have seen little results but nothing all that noticeable. I'm going to start drinking protein shakes and my diet has a fair amount of protein. Is there anything else I can do to make bigger gains or will it just take more time?Advice on building muscle and making gains?
If you haven't worked out much before, the little gains that you are seeing now are beginner gains. All beginners get them. But once those new gains run out... then it's time to look a little deeper at things.

Most of the time when gains stop it is due to diet. Most people don't want to believe that.. but it's true. If you are not gaining you are:

    A. Not eating enough

    AND/OR

    B. Not working intensely enough (more is not better)

    AND/OR

    C. Not resting enough. Sleep is critical as well.

    AND/OR

    D. Over training

Also check out the other site below for how much you should be eating.

Hope that helps!Advice on building muscle and making gains?
What does ';a fair amount of protein'; mean? Bodybuilders get scientific about it - they track their protein down to the gram.

Studies show that you need to get over 1g of protein per pound of bodyweight every single day in order to grow lean muscle faster.[1] (This link also has price comparisons from many stores for the best protein deals)

You also need to eat enough clean foods to gain weight.[2]

Get on fitday.com and start entering your foods to see where you REALLY stand - you might be fooling yourself.

You can also take creatine, which is proven safe and effective[3,4]

Other than that, keep it up, and do big, compound lifts like bench press, squats, and deadlifts. Maybe it's time to research a new workout dedicated to getting bigger, like Hypertrophy-Specific Training[5]
you just gotta keep working on it and dont worry about what your results were in the past and keep looking forward and push yourself harder than you were before and protein shakes help alot too but you just gotta make a schedule and stick to it
I was always told that to gain mass you used more weight and less repetitions.

A leaner, more ripped physique is gotten from more reps of a lesser weight.

Try increasing your aerobic capacity. Having a greater capacity will enable you to work out for longer periods.

Advice about building a popsicle stick bridge?

hey, for an assignment i've been told for me and my group to construct a bridge out of popsicle sticks and a white wood glue. it has to be over 15 in. and less than 18 in. long. and a like 3-5 in wide. From what i understand there has to be a roadbed with a gap wide enough to accomidate the thing the load will be hung with. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.Advice about building a popsicle stick bridge?
I'm really not sure...but we have the same hair!!Advice about building a popsicle stick bridge?
The most strongest structural element is a triangle. So combined triangles one pointed up, next to one pointed down, next to one pointed up will give you the best bridge. That is why steel bridges are always constructed that way. You may also want to use the same thing for the road bed base and then build up straight sticks on top for the road bed.

Remember there is glue and there is glue. When companies make glue laminated wood (a sheet of plywood like material filled with wood chips) the glue is stronger than the wood material itself. Try something like Gorilla Glue or Borden's Ultimate Glue. Those glues are stronger and should be at least as strong as the sticks themselves. If you use Elmer's White Glue then expect failure. Unless your instructions specifically say you have to use Elmer’s glue I would use something else, and avoid using super glue. The glue I am thinking of is stronger and cheaper by volume. You can find that glue at your local home center.

The key to a strong structure is to distribute the weight and control how it goes down into the ground. The Middle Ages say the invention of the flying buttress which allowed thinner walls and more glass, but transferring the force to thick outer columns. You will want to control the load in a similar fashion. For example use a triangle to pull the load from the sides of the bridge to the columns. A good column would be to have one vertical stick with two bracing sticks on each side at a 45 degree angle or so. You don't want to make a long stick by combining two sticks in a straight pattern; try a triangle instead and use those as your basic unit of design.

If you use the triangle base for under the roadway then that will help you tie both sides of the structure together. Don't be afraid to use cross bracing under the bridge, real bridges do. How many columns are you limited to? Will you have to span a certain distance? That will be the critical factor. If you can make your spans as short as possible and for stability don’t just have the bridge end in points. You can use a flat stick that attaches to the base to transfer the load from the column into the ground; that’s the job of a foundation. Your “bedrock” base will be the floor and you can’t dig into it but you can distribute the weight across it.
Do several practice glue joints before you start it. Get the rules in writing and use them. If they say you can only use sticks and glue, you could drill holes in the sticks and make wood pins to tightly fit in them and greatly strengthen the joints for example..
Somethings to take into consideration: On the bottom and the top of the road, lay your sticks in a X about every 2-3 inches. If you do layers - you can do a X then a strait layer another X layer a strait layer and a final X layer. That way if it starts to buckle, the X's hold it together a little bit more because the X creates stability. If there is a limit on the number of sticks you can use then I would say an X on the middle would be the best. Middle being between two layers.

Remember - Angles are you friend. What you want to do it support the bottom and top with angles or arches, they dont look like much but it really helps. Your going to want to use extra glue, and make sure that you have enough time to let it solidly dry. Make it in pieces - suck as the left side of the bridge - the right side of the bridge, and the road. The left and the right should be held togther by lot of support beams.

If you can use any more things, then I would say twine would help if you can make arches. If you can use twine - then twist two pieces together (like the cables on suspension bridges) and secure them below the road, not to the road. If its attaches to the road it will break - even with glue holding it. If you go below it or even through it, then it supports it even more.

I hope this helps, I used this rig and one a building fair type of thing. Science club or whatever you call it. WE called it Young Engineers.
maybe a mansion with 16 bathrooms
    Triangles, lots of them.
Triangles are the strongest shape you can use to support weight. Squares and rectangles (vertically) will collapse.
trusses! check out real bridges! this is what engineers do all day. :P
Just use triangles and ask your teacher of other strategies that can be used to help you!

Can anyone give me any advice on building muscles?

like what diet should I focus on.. how should i go about with my workout.. etc, etc.

and im not exactly into getting very big muscles and super abs so dont give me any extreme advice lol. thanks! Can anyone give me any advice on building muscles?
Are you a complete beginner trying to do work outs?

Well, as you know, if you want to have muscles, you need to train your body.

And first of all, you need to do cardiovascular exercises every day for at least 30 minutes and you should do it before working out. Cardios such as running, jogging, swimming, rope jumping are great.

Then here comes to the work out part. And due to the fact that you didn't give much information about yourself, so I don't know which parts on your body you would like to work on. So basically I just give you a work out generator first and then you can try to use it to generate your workout routine.

    http://www.menshealth.co.uk/base/workout鈥?/a>

And you should do the work outs EVERY OTHER DAY to let your body to take a rest, to recover. But when it comes to the day that you don't need to work out, keep in mind that you still need to do cardio. And as for how many sets and reps (repetitions), well it depends on how many times you can lift. If you are already physically strong, you may want to add more weight when you are lifting. Basically you should at least do 3 sets in every work out, and have a determined reps in it. When you are tired of the sets and reps, you can always add more weight or increase the sets and reps as much as you want. But don't overdo it.

And if you have soreness after the first day working out, it is completely normal. It means that you've never used that part of your body and the work outs you do made it tensed. So don't worry if you are gonna have this situation. Just leave your body for a rest and you will be fine.

And as for what to eat. Well every kind of food with high PROTEIN helps. Those foods are milk, eggs; fishes like tuna or any other kinds of fishes; and lean meat like chicken, turkey; and vegetables like nuts, every kind of nuts. Or like you may notice that there's a product for working out called WHEY PROTEIN SHAKE, and this is actually really helpful for people who work out and try to have big muscles (bulk up). And remember that you should have your meal and drink the whey protein shake right after your work out is over. And remember to get enough sleep, and drink at least 8 glasses of water to hydrate your body, and keep doing your workout routine.

Well I think it's pretty much it and yeah this is a very long journey and sorry for spending your time in reading this.

So just keep doing it and you'll get there.

All the best to you!Can anyone give me any advice on building muscles?
hi to develope more muscle eat more protein like lean chicken, and fish: tuna is good, also try for lentils as they give energy and protein. do weights and cardio, gain muscle but not get huge, do more cardio say 20-30mins 5-6 times a week and do med weights. the weights will develope muscle and the cardio will stretch it giving you lean muscle which it sounds is what u want, if u think u getting too big then go to small weights and do more cardio. (just up the intensity or add an extra 10 mins)
eat things like boiled eggs to help your muscles build

and the best exercise to do is swimming and do the butterfly to build muscles or just try doing weights:)

    hope this helps x

Advice on building up my toddlers immune system?

She is constantly sick and having to take antibiotics and I am now fed upwith it. How can I build up her immune system where she will get better on her own and not get sick as much?Advice on building up my toddlers immune system?
well antibiotics make the immune system worse because it kills the good flora in the stomach that helps fight off infections along with the bad bacteria. My advice is to give her PRO biotics to build back the good flora, you can get this at a healthfood store. Also, don't give her antibiotics everytime she gets sick.....they should only be used in very serious situations...not just for an ear infection or runny nose....

I have found that when any of us come down with something when we use a few drops of hydrogene peroxide in the ear and let it bubble that it gets rid of whatever it is thats infecting. you can research this technique at mercola.com

It has worked wonders in our house!

Also, if your child gets a fever, don't give any medicine to lower the fever because the body needs that fever to kill off the infection....fevers are NOT dangerous and do NOT cause brain damage.....they could cause convultions if really really high but will NOT cause brain damage, so there is no need to lower them. If you do it will only make it harder for the body to get over.

Also, get rid of the sugar! no jucies or sugary drinks, this lowers the immune system drastically....children do NOT need juice as a part of their diet.

I hope this helps a little.......my daughter is hardly ever sick.....and when she is it doesn't last long.Advice on building up my toddlers immune system?
    day care
Last year my daughter was sick constantly. This year, vowing not to spend every other week at the doctors office, I made I point to give her a childrens vitamin everyday, and have her drink much more water. She hasn't been sick once. I think its just that extra vitamin boost and hydration kept the virus's at bay.

    Good luck!
Day care or preschool helps kids get exposed to germs, good and bad, and beefs up their immune system. Also, throw out the antibacterial gel and wipes, those actually work against our immune systems. Just wash hands before eating and you're fine.
My son was sick all the time too, constantly with respiratory infections. I started giving him hylands vitamin c tablets (You should be able to get them at a health food store.) twice a day and he hasnt been sick in almost 3 months. He is just a little over 1 now, so thats a long time for us.
I have the same problem, so I saw a naturopathic doctor. We are giving her probiotics and she is healthier than I have see her in a long time. She has had so many colds, allergies, respiratory infections ... name it and she has probably had it. She got an ear infection in december that had been going on for months. We did four or five courses of antibiotics and none of them were helping, so I went to this doctor. She told us to start probiotics. Every part of our bodies has bacteria in it that it needs to digest food, fight infection and keep us healthy in general. When we take antibiotics it kills off the good bacteria in addition to the bad bacteria that is making us sick. Probiotics add the healthy bacteria back into our systems, allowing our insides to rebalance and be healthy. We are using probiotics made for babies. We add it to her bottles. It made a HUGE difference in her, so my husband and I are taking them too, and we feel great. We got them at the Healthy Life Market. She is in daycare so she is exposed to everything all the time. We are also washing her hands and face when she gets home, more to protect ourselves than her, but it is helping too. She is one, and when she gets a little older, we will start putting echinecha (I dont know how to spell it) in her food. Echinecha gives white blood cells a boost. You dont take it all the time, only when you feel something coming on.

I hope that helps, there is nothing worse than a sick kid.
There is not a ton you can do about it, as they grow older they fight off these things better.... but in the meantime I'm a big advocate of vitamins - any extra bit helps. I've also used those Zycam (zinc coated Q-tips) that I swab their noses with at the first sign of a cold.... its supposed to lessen the duration and severity of a cold. Also, basic handwashing... make sure its done properly and after every playdate, after school, before eating dinner, etc. Running a humidifer during the winter months in their bedrooms can also help. Make sure she gets plenty of sleep.

I'm not sure how old your daughter is, but I noticed with my kids, around age 4, I noticed a huge turnaround in their health. Also, I am not sure what your daughter is on antibiotics for.... but if its ear infections - my son and daughter both have had tubes put in which drastically reduced the number of ear infections. My daughter also had her tonsils and adenoids removed - HUGE improvement in overall health.

    Hope this helps!!!
Look at different diet approaches- maybe speak to dietician, GP or buy some childrens diet books.

Speak to GP about her immune system as there could be an underlying medical condition for this.

As for me (I have immune issues) I drink lots of orange juice, have vitamins, have los of sleep and eat balanced diet.

Whats some good advice on building muscle?

This year I am going to run cross country and then later do track and field. I'm 5'5'; and 145 pounds but I think I am going to lose a lot of weight running so much. Best rules advice for building a 12-team keeper league?

The league has been around for more than a decade. We voted to switch to a keeper league at the end of last season. I'm looking for online advice and/or tips to present the rules to the rest of the league.

The league scoring is standard.Best rules advice for building a 12-team keeper league?
I'll throw a little at this and see what sticks. We just converted our 17-year league this year, so I'm in the same boat.

Keeper leagues and dynasty leagues have spawned some unusual hybrids.

The key is in the keeper by-laws. We elected to go with the ';two-round rule'; as payment for the keeper in question.

We keep ONE player. I think keeping multiple players is fine, but penalizes managers who catch the injury bug.

We also have been wrestling with how to assign a draft pick price on undrafted players, or players that were drafted but were jettisoned to the waiver wire. We ultimately decided to charge a 10th round pick for undrafted players.

(The guy who picked up Ryan Grant last season of the wire is golden.)

Dave Richard's article attached may be of some help in calibrating your thinking.Best rules advice for building a 12-team keeper league?
you should only be able to keep up to three players, no more than one per position. You then give up the draft pick that the player was originally drafted in.

Can anyone give me advice on building my own computer?

I want to teach my son how to build a computer. I have heard its not that hard. Any tips or advice for a beiginner? Can anyone give me advice on building my own computer?
It's not that hard these days - many parts are designed so that you can't insert them or hook them up wrong. I'd recommend looking for hardware info at http://www.tomshardware.com/ The one drawback is that it can actually cost more than buying a computer, but you may be able to get some good deals or rebates that will pay off. Tigerdirect.com and newegg.com are both good places for parts. Building a computer also gives you better control over the quality of the parts. A few years ago I built a computer at the same time my husband bought an equivalent Dell. While they had the same CPUs and the same amount of RAM, my computer was visibly faster because I had picked out better parts. It can be fun as well.

You can also get basic info on building a computer at the following pages:

Go to Sharkeyextreme.com and read what they have under guides. I would recommend buying the products they have listed that match what your looking to spend. They also have awesome articles on building your first PC.

Safety first. Those parts are extremely easy to fry. It isn't hard, but the heatsink, paste, and motherboard are a pain to install.

With the paste, if you get too much your comp will overheat, the motherboard is incredibly easy to fry, and the heatsink has the weirdest installion, so watch out for them.
Go to your local book store or public library. There are books which provides information on PC hardware and for building your own computer.
kelli D, check out Howcomputerswork.com, Howstuffworks.com,(computers),Hardwarese鈥?Sysopt.com,Hopecomputer.com, to get you started.
    Choose in order:

    CPU

    Motherboard

    RAM

    Hard Drive, IDE or SATA

    Everything else as needed.

Have fun, it is pretty easy.
no it's not hard. the component are usally the hardest for a beginner to choose because you can rack up a hefty bill when you could have bought a very fast emachine for cheaper. your decisions will be based on what you want to use it for. a gamer system will cost you because the best parts are needed for that stress put on the machine when in use. if you can trust certain ebayers, find a motherboard with the processor together such as an A-Bit board with an XP processor size of 2600-2800 or higher. doing this if you just want to build a machine is the cheapest way to go until you really get familiar with these things. there is alot out there to choose from. only thing is watch what you spend. the money adds up fast and when you see what you have for the money, you might not have much. if you get a HDD, don't buy a used one. get new. certain things you can buy used but other thing buy new.
No its not hard at all. I am a computer builder if you need any tips of advice just email me at mhurst002@roadrunner.com. I am also on aim at bud102282 and yahoo at mhurst4830
How can you teach if you don't know?

Anyway there are many excellent web tutorials on this but the key thing if to make sure all the parts are compatible. (I think that the is a book on this in the ';for dummies'; series.)

    Good luck!
Building a PC is easy, when you know how! The best thing to do is to find a friend or neighbour who has done it before and can help you. All the previous answers are correct, there are lots of websites that can TELL you how, but the best way is to SEE it done.

If you're determined to go it alone, start small: Upgrade an existing computer. Once you've opened the PC up and seen how it looks inside, changed a couple of cards or the processor, you'll have seen the issues involved and building a new PC won't seem like such a challenge.

Buying compatible parts is the most important thing; here some experience really helps. I would strongly reccomend that you buy all your parts from one supplier, and you should ask them to check if they are intercompatible.

I'm a total novice and I don't know any html. Are there any web editors for beginners? Or could you teach me a bit of html? My friend said website building tutorials are out of date. I've asked him for help but I don't think he can be bothered.

Then when I've designed my website what do I do? How do I host it / put it online or whatever? Can you recommend any good or free hosts?Could you give me some advice on building a website?
If you want to create a real website you need to get a real (paid) hosting and a domain name (like www.yourwebsite.com). You can't get it for free.

I recommend one of these http://www.webhostingtable.com

rent a virtual host to put all your webpages in the server

then you can see your webpages in the internet

building a real website with .com or your domain name

is like having a physical store

3 steps you need to complete

    1. find a physical store (find a server/virtual host)

you may rent or do it by yourself or but it

Rent-means you need ';virtual host'; (search engine can help you)

Do it by yourself - find a computer and set it as a server

    here is the server-related search

    http://english.tsmmc.com/search.php?query=server%26amp;action=results

    2. put your commodities in your physical store (uploading your contents to server)

Web contents are placed to the server(photos or texts)

any function you need can install in this stage

    here is the webpage-related search

    http://english.tsmmc.com/search.php?query=webpage%26amp;action=results

    3. name your physical store (domain name setting like www.tsmmc.com)

visitors can link to your website with your domain name easily

    by setting DNS server

here is the domain name-related search

    http://english.tsmmc.com/search.php?query=domain%26amp;action=results

try outsourcing of it - you will save a lot of time
Microsoft Office Live Small Business makes it easy to build your own site without any HTML knowledge because it is template based. This means you enter the information you want, and the service codes your work so that you don't have to. It also let's you register a domain name and hosts the site, which are two things you need if you want to have a real website.

    Cheers,

Also i do love the Sams 24 hour books, as a beginner and as an expert for references .

For hosting, you will need a domain first (godaddy.com about $12 a year) or most hosting companies will get the domain for you free. Hosting is a lot cheaper than most people think even $5 to $8 a month .. I help run a site on webhosting (and other related things) and these are the three most popular:

    hostgator ($5 to $7 a month)

    http://tinyurl.com/yhllcdv

    EasyCGI ($8/month)

    http://tinyurl.com/yg5q9ah

    Webhosting Buzz ($6/month)

    http://tinyurl.com/yb4xz4e

When you register for your account, keep your activation email and read it carefully. It can be intimidating at first glance but everything you need is there. It tells you how to access your account, how to configure your DNS (already done for you if you purchase the domain through the hosting company), how to transfer your website over, and voila! You are online

I've had requests from friends I've helped that I should video myself doing a website from scratch and putting it on youtube and our site - perhaps I should :)

I suggest http://site123.com , they have a great set of tools and free tech support.
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. A domain name is a name you want to call your website (ex: www.yahoo.com). To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.

As an experienced webmaster I recommend BH web hosting which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting %26amp; I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.

You can reach reviews about this web hosting provider and its latest DISCOUNT COUPONS at:

    http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

They also offer ';Free Site Builder'; that helps you build your web pages without difficulty if you are not skilled in using any website creating program. (WYSIWYG: What You See Is What You Get) You can use this service optionally. You can also create the pages offline with your favorite program (DreamWeaver, FrontPage, Microsoft Publisher, etc.), and then upload them to your web host. This is another easy way to get your website online.

Does anybody have advice on building a go-kart?

I want to make a simple go-kart with a gasoline engine. I have a 3.5 HP Briggs %26amp; Stratton motor from an old power washer. We don't want a high speed racer, just a fun vehicle for goofing around. Least amount of $ out of pocket is a big priority. I am making this for my teenage grandson, so it must be adult-sized. I am looking to venture into portrait photography but like many artists, I don't have the resources to pay models. i am of course willing to do an even trade, i.e. Time for CD images and of course I treat it as if it was a paid job.

Other than craigslist, where can I advertise my services to get models. I am mostly interested in aspiring models. I live in New York as well.

Thanks so much.Need some good advice on building my portfolio?
Your best source to start out shooting ';models'; would be some of your friends, sister, brother and they might even know somebody that you could also shoot. If not then you will have to hire a couple of models to get what you are looking for.

Why don't you look at this website and look over some of the portfolios in there (models and photographers). Find a couple of models in your area that would be interested in doing a TFP (Time For Prints) or TFCD (Time For CD). You will have to have them sign a model release so that you and he / she can use the images.

If you do join as a photographer do not just go with the beginners portfolio but maybe at least silver level and update regularly.

No model at any agency is going to do something for free, the agency will make sure of that. Ask your friends to help you, walk around with your camera and ask people on the street. Give a dollar to a wino if he's interesting. You are going to need some ';studio'; shots too. You need to show your ability with lights, a low and high key backgrounds and so on.
    Go to http://www.onemodelplace.com, and http://www.modelmayhem.com.

They are industry standard model/photographer networking, profile and public portfolio sites.

OMP has photog memberships starting at about $80, and MM has free memberships. They are great places to find TFP candidates.

Agencys would be a waste of time for TFP searches. They have their own opinions about copyright/ ownership of photos produced, and they dont always benefit the photog.
There are hundreds of model agencies that you can contact. See if anyone is willing to do some free lance work, or to help a starving artist. Also, plenty of magazines in NYC that you can put ';wanted'; ads in.

When things don't go the way you expect, either you made a mistake in your calculations, or the rest of the world is wrong. In this case, the odds are that it is the former condition, that is true. You have tried to get a quote that you feel is reasonable, but have gotten either no response, or an estimate that you think is inflated, from each contractor. I believe that you have underestimated the time and effort involved. Some people won't quote a job that is too much for their company to handle, or the wrong type of work for their skill set. Others may have determined that you had an unreasonably low expected cost , and figured it was a waste of their time to go through the quoting process. Look at some of the quotes you received. Do they mention the amount of man-hours required? If not, call a couple back, and ask them if they have an idea of how much time they think it would take. Realize that non-professionals will take longer to do most jobs. Make sure you understand what you're getting into, before you start. Once you start, you need to be able to complete the job. Most contractors abhor getting involved in completing projects started by others. Good luck, which ever way you go.
what needs done? repointing? if so wash it all down and then clean the joints with a chisel or small grinder. wash again. apply sand and cement mix between the stones with a pointing trowel and brush finish them when wet.

due to the height, you will need scaffolding. the best thing to do is to remove the copings and clean the mortar off them. then re-bed them. also you should try to clean the flat sandstone around the windows at the top with a hose, not a power hose or it is likely to flake. and then fill the joints as above, with sand and cement and a yellow dye mixed into it. you can get cement dyes at all building merchants, very cheap. the rest of it should be left as is, because to replace it would be mega money........ but you could plaster the top brick work for the same cost or cheaper, as you need the scaffold anyway. i would recomend the bags of plaster called k-rend as it is silicone based and will be a water proofer also.

i can see why no one wants to start it as it is going to be a lot of work.

good luck, hope you find someone.

also check with building control at you council to see if you can alter the apperance of your building.
without knowing where you live, it is impossible to help you out
Watch out - there's almost certainly a load of rubbish - oh sorry - Health and Safety Regulations which will conspire to stop you from doing anything on your own (such as not standing on anything higher than a cigarette packet on your own in case you fall off and injure yourself) so you'd better have a look at their site first ! ! !
Sorry to disappoint you but this job needs doing by professionals, as it is a big high building set right on the pavement, which means a danger to pedestrians whilst you working overhead. You will need council permission to erect scaffolding over the pavement + all the regulations that go with it, it's a similar job to doing up old churches etc, usually done with high pressure water spray or sand blasted to get it clean first, then any remedial work pointing etc to follow. This is a skilled %26amp; expensive job, not one for a d i yer sorry.PS it will look fantastic when brought back to its original splendour, good look with the project.

Need advice on building a speaker cabinet?

I have 2 x 10'; speakers and 2 x 4'; speakers that I removed from some old stereo equipment. I would like to make a speaker cabinet for bass/guitar using these. The speakers are hooked up with the spring jacks in the back (+,-). I will need my cab to have the standard 1/4'; jack. I can do some new wiring if need be but I don't really know where to start. I have looked at parts and may have a general idea of how it fits together but is it really as simple as connecting the speakers to the 1/4'; jack? Someone please help.Need advice on building a speaker cabinet?
If you are using an external amplifier, It would be as simple as building a box, mounting the speakers, wiring the speakers to a jack, plugging It into the amp and plugging your guitar into the amp.

Need advice on building model airplane?

    A homebuilt cessna 172:

i'm using a size 25 glow engine, and i built the wingspan at 52.7 inches the length of fuselage is 30 inches.....

how much weight would the airplane hav to be to be flyable for that engine?

and wat are the odds of using a 4 channel control wit no rudder control?Need advice on building model airplane?
That should be enough power, just dont expect a speed demon or anything.

I would try to keep in between 45 to 60 ounces.

Shouldnt be a problem. As long as you have alierons and a elevator you can steer the plane. You should have pleanty of channels though.

    1 channel - Throttle

    2 channel- Ailerons

    3 channel- Elevator

4 channel- Not used thats fineNeed advice on building model airplane?
attach solid fuel to the wings for a turbo boost!
.25 is real small for the wing span you are working with. I you should be in the .50 range. .40 min. Once you raise the nose for takoff you are going to create induced drag which is a byproduct of lift. This is the point that without enough power you are going to get in to trouble. without the power to transition thru this very demanding portion of flight you will most likely stall the aircraft. To be that size and use that engine it eill have to be as light as you can possibly make it. What materials are you using. Foam? if not foam you need to go larger on the engine. Good luck.
Weight should be under 2lbs loaded. Be certain you have the CoG properly placed.

I would utilize the radio with throttle, rudder, elevator and leave the 4th blank. It's much more important to have rudder control than ailerons when you need to turn.
My first RC model was a 64'; three channel ARF (almost ready to fly) trainer powered by a Magnum Pro .28 producing 1 HP. The all up weight was 5.75 pounds and it flew quite well. The three channel radio controlled throttle, rudder and elevator. I had several hunded flights with only twelve major rebuilds.

  • Any advice on building an outdoor enclosure for cats?

I want to build or have built an outdoor enclosure for my three cats with a cat door into my house so they can come and go as they please. I want it to be secure (structurally sound) and to look nice and blend in with the landscape. Any suggestions? Are there companies that sell prefabricated enclosures? I live at South end of the San Francisco Bay near San Jose, CA. Do you know of anyone in this area who specializes in building these enclosures? Would you recommend them?Any advice on building an outdoor enclosure for cats?

    Maybe a chain link fence
I bought this cat enclosure last summer. I was so pleased with it. I bought two more to add alot of room for my cats.I have 5 Siamese which are very agile energentic cats. They have not been able to get out of this cat fencing system. They don't even try. I set it up so that Its up against a window in my house so they can just go out the window and back in.It was and still is well worth the investment to have peace of mind knowing my cats are safe outside. My neighbor likes mine so well she has ordered. two..It does not stick out in the yard it blends in fine..I still keep them in at night. But I'm in a wooded area and worry about predators at night as we have fox, coyotes and fishers.More then likely they would be fine at night going out. But I sleep better knowing there all inside safe and sound. This is the web site.http://www.purrfectfence.com/

.It really is a wonderfull enclosure and it was easy to install it. Stands up well to Maine winters also.
Cats enclosure? Well considering they are excellent climbers, jumpers and can squeeze through tight places you are up for a challenge.

Chicken wire stapled to the outside of a wood-framed box might work, depending on how you secure it in place. Then, again, a harness and leash attached to clothes line might be best...

It all depends on the outdoor space you have. It is hard to answer your question without the details of the perimeters you are dealing with.
This has been my personal dream for years, after working at a shelter that had an outdoor area for the cats (conected with a door and small cat door).

Our enclosure had a huge cat tree - which was basically an 8+ foot tree meant for cats. The bark was removed, no leaves, etc. It was great for them to climb on, rest on little levels, etc.

We also had lots of large cat toys, scratch posts, ball-go-rounds, boxes, chairs, etc. We even had a small kids pool, with a bit of water in there and floating toys (we had a few cats that loved the water).

I would personally love to have lots of natural type cat trees, big bushes (fake trees to hide in), hiding spots, etc. Have the roof covered, so that they will always have shade and prtection from rain (our cats would sit lined up watching the rain, lol).

A built in water feature would be cool (like a fountain or similar). Cats seem to love watching water run, and love to paw at it.

The shelter's enclosure was made of chain link fencing, cemented into the ground, with the big tree in the center, also cemented into the ground.

Well, good luck and have fun!

Try these guys. You can look at the designs a build something similar if you are handy. These are nifty enclosures and they will customize depending on your outdoor space an which elements you would like to include in your enclosure. I must commend you on this idea. THIS is the only way I would ever reccomend letting a cat outside.
One of my co-workers built something similar for his daughter. He said it's kind of like a smaller version of a sun-room. The cats feel like they are outside while safely inside. I'd check with those companies (not Sears) that sell the pre-fab sunroom enclosures that attach to the house.

Get a nice looking, high (6 ft) fence. You could put flowers and stuff in front of the fence to brighten the place up. Hang some string and balls on string. You could knock a hole in the door, as a cat door and cover it up with a cloth.
I agree with jaded ruby. I was curious about the sight and what a hell of an idea. I liked the room with a view,to cool
There are companies that make cat fencing.
make it like a closed in porch, that is a cat enclosure and has plenty of activites for them but make it so you can us it too, if you live somewhere that that is reasonable.

Can anyone offer advice on building up my credit?

I've just turned 18 and I've never had a job a day in my life. I just want some advice on how to build credit up, while you'er young. Can anyone offer advice on building up my credit?
The lender - every reputable lender - wants EVERY borrower to have ';a track record';.

Lenders want to see - through a credit report or credit reports - how well [or not-so-well] the borrower manages and budgets his/her/their money and income.

A very good friend of mine went to a bank and asked to borrow $50,000.00 The credit report was downloaded from a credit bureau. My friend had no credit. When the various bills were received in the mail, my friend preferred paying for everything in full. RESULT: Instead of getting approved to borrow $50,000.00, my friend was approved for and could borrow only $1,500.

Due to the lack of ';a track record';, the bank officer informed my friend the best way to be approved for a larger amount was to make monthly payments for just one (1) year. THEN pay off that small loan and apply for a larger amount.

Its easy, when someone informs another of what the lender REALLY wants: the lender wants that interest. The lender wants to see the borrower's track record.

    I wish you well!

Need advice on building fences and dog house?

what type of wood, materials and stuffNeed advice on building fences and dog house?
Setting wooden posts in the ground gets a bad rap. It actually is by far the best way to build a wooden fence if you choose to go the wood route. If done properly, even though it WILL decay because it is wood, it should last 15 to 20 years, and normally people don't expect to have the same fence for 20+ years. I've built fences for about 8 years, and every one of them is still arrow-straight. For dogs like the ones you have, depending on their personalities you could use a normal 4' to 6' fence, but dogs can often jump that, so an 8' wooden privacy fence would be your best bet.

something along the lines of this http://www.cumbriafencingltd.co.uk/New%2鈥?/a>

Just a short list of what you might need:

As far as wood goes, use cedar. You will need 6x6x (for an 8' fence 12' for a shorter fence 8')posts, 1x4 slats, and 2x4s for the rails and for gates.

    Some materials/tools/etc you will need:

    -Post hole diggers

-Shovel for adding DRY concrete mix)

    -Wheel Barrel for concrete mix

-Digging bar with a tamper on one end and wedge iron on other

-Chain saw to cut excess length off of posts

    -A circular saw for rails

-A few stakes and some bright nylon string for layout

    -Upside down spray paint

    -A measuring tape for marking

-A long measuring tape for layout (preferably the large kind with a handle)

    -Plenty of pencils

    -A good 4ft level

    -A framing hammer

-10D and 8D nails (Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG) ring shank if available

    - 4 or 6 Joist hangers for each post to hold secure the rails to the posts (depends on how many rails you use)

-A SEMI flexible plastic rod to mark the arcs for the tops of the slats

-A coping saw to cut the slats matching the arc

-A drill/driver for installing gate hardware

    -A broom/rake/flat shovel for cleanup

DO NOT mix the concrete, dry pack it and use the digging bar to tamp it in place. (wedge side first to mix in an up and down motion in the hole, then tamp it with the flat side until firm. There should be absolutely no movement in the post.) Intermittantly shovel some of the dirt you took out in with concrete around the post, about equal parts, maybe a liiiitttle bit more concrete than dirt.

Need advice on building fences and dog house?
I have built several wooden fences and they don't last primarily because the in ground posts rot, even red wood. The last one I built I used steel posts, they are the same one's used to construct a chain link fence. Fittings are available that you attach to the posts and used to support the 2x4 railings. Much better job. You will find the posts and brackets at Lowes or Home Depot. You do not have to use redwood ; if wood is not in contact with ground cedar will last as long and is cheaper.
    Redwood for the fence(best wood for outdoors),redwood posts: 4x4x8, slats and 2x4x6 rails:all redwood.How big is/are the dog(s)? Plywood and 2x4x6 pine.Any more info?

Need advice on building dog run / cage please?

I have a lab and indoor cats and just bought a new house. Ultimately I want my animals to be SAFE and secure but the dog needs to be able to get out on his own to potty during the day. I plan to put a doggy door in a wall where the animals can come and go in and out at will. I would like to build a dog run /cage that attaches to the house so once the animals use the door they enter into this secure cage. I would like to make this out of some nice hard rubber mesh or metal with hard rubber coating to it doesn鈥檛 heat up or rust easily. It will be fully secured so nobody can easily steal the animals. I was planning on building it 6 inches off the ground where I can put trays under it to catch the waste for easy cleaning. Our friend build a very nice run for his cats out of the same mesh he uses for lobster traps but not sure where to find it. The run will be 4 feet deep by 15 long and 5 high. Any ideas, recommendations would be appreciated.Need advice on building dog run / cage please?
I went the easy way with 6x10 ft chainlink panels from the farm store. No rust in 3+ years. Ours is 10x20x6. 5 ft tall is a pain in the neck and back to clean, unless you're very short.

By ';lab';, I assume you mean labrador retreiver. Ours is a digger, so I buried 1 ft sq concrete tiles around the perimeter inside the run in the grassy area (ours is half on concrete, half on grass -- we're in a rainy climate. There is a gated division between the two halves for the rainy season.

    Our system is similar to:http://www.hooverfence.com/kennel/custom鈥?/a>

Check your local farm stores for fence panels.

ps: cats dig, too, and will dig under a fence.

The most important thing you have to be aware of when you're replacing necks on guitars is to get one that is the same scale length as the current neck is. If you don't do that, the guitar will never play in tune.

If you don't know about scale length and how it relates to the fret spacing, you don't need to be doing this kind of modification yourself.

Any advice is helpful. ThanksCan you give me advice on building a bar in my garage?
    1.Do not drink and drive!

    2. Dry bar is easy, just have booze and glass storage. Wet bar is a different story since you will need plumbing hookups.

3.Decide on exactly what you will be drinking like beer, scotch, wine or juice. That may influence the design.

4.Go get some literature. (But you knew that anyway.)Can you give me advice on building a bar in my garage?
Go to Home Depot, or Lowes. They have tons of plans there.
It is important to have a bar in the garage. You jus thave to search, search, search until you find something that will work for you.
