what type of wood, materials and stuffNeed advice on building fences and dog house?
Setting wooden posts in the ground gets a bad rap. It actually is by far the best way to build a wooden fence if you choose to go the wood route. If done properly, even though it WILL decay because it is wood, it should last 15 to 20 years, and normally people don't expect to have the same fence for 20+ years. I've built fences for about 8 years, and every one of them is still arrow-straight. For dogs like the ones you have, depending on their personalities you could use a normal 4' to 6' fence, but dogs can often jump that, so an 8' wooden privacy fence would be your best bet.
something along the lines of this http://www.cumbriafencingltd.co.uk/New%2鈥?/a>
Just a short list of what you might need:
As far as wood goes, use cedar. You will need 6x6x (for an 8' fence 12' for a shorter fence 8')posts, 1x4 slats, and 2x4s for the rails and for gates.
Some materials/tools/etc you will need:
-Post hole diggers
-Shovel for adding DRY concrete mix)
-Wheel Barrel for concrete mix
-Digging bar with a tamper on one end and wedge iron on other
-Chain saw to cut excess length off of posts
-A circular saw for rails
-A few stakes and some bright nylon string for layout
-Upside down spray paint
-A measuring tape for marking
-A long measuring tape for layout (preferably the large kind with a handle)
-Plenty of pencils
-A good 4ft level
-A framing hammer
-10D and 8D nails (Hot Dipped Galvanized (HDG) ring shank if available
- 4 or 6 Joist hangers for each post to hold secure the rails to the posts (depends on how many rails you use)
-A SEMI flexible plastic rod to mark the arcs for the tops of the slats
-A coping saw to cut the slats matching the arc
-A drill/driver for installing gate hardware
-A broom/rake/flat shovel for cleanup
DO NOT mix the concrete, dry pack it and use the digging bar to tamp it in place. (wedge side first to mix in an up and down motion in the hole, then tamp it with the flat side until firm. There should be absolutely no movement in the post.) Intermittantly shovel some of the dirt you took out in with concrete around the post, about equal parts, maybe a liiiitttle bit more concrete than dirt.
Need advice on building fences and dog house?
I have built several wooden fences and they don't last primarily because the in ground posts rot, even red wood. The last one I built I used steel posts, they are the same one's used to construct a chain link fence. Fittings are available that you attach to the posts and used to support the 2x4 railings. Much better job. You will find the posts and brackets at Lowes or Home Depot. You do not have to use redwood ; if wood is not in contact with ground cedar will last as long and is cheaper.
Redwood for the fence(best wood for outdoors),redwood posts: 4x4x8, slats and 2x4x6 rails:all redwood.How big is/are the dog(s)? Plywood and 2x4x6 pine.Any more info?
