Can you give me any advice on building a guinea pig cage?

i want to build my own ideal cage in the garage i want it to be very large with ladders and different floors to give them a happy life any advice on how to build materials to use etcCan you give me any advice on building a guinea pig cage?
Well done for wanting to house your pigs in a good cage!

In my opinion the best home made cages are c+c cages. These are really easy to make, the materials are cheap to buy, and you can make them pretty much any size or shape you like. The website will explain how to make a c+c cage, and you can also find where to buy materials, see photos of other people's cages etc.

The minimum cage size for 2 pigs is 7.5 - 8 sq feet. (or a 2x3 grid c+c cage)

Personally, I still find this too small - my 2 pigs are in a 2x5 c+c (about 13 sq feet) and I would still expand it if I had more room!

The more pigs you have, the more space you need.

Other levels can be nice, but they do not actually count towards the minimum space requirement (in other words you still need at least a 2x3 for 2 pigs, even if it has 2 floors).

This is because guinea pigs are naturally ground dwelling animals, who don't really climb or jump much. They need their space on one flat level so that they can run around and popcorn. Some pigs never really use upper levels.

If you want to include them, you need to make sure they are safe (the pigs can't fall off), and that the ramps are not too steep. Please don't use ';ladders'; with open rungs as the pigs are likely to injure themselves on them. There is some info on ramps and steps in the photo gallery of that website.

If for some reason you don't want a c+c, there are other options. You could start by building something similar to a rabbit run - a wooden frame with wire mesh walls. Then you would just need to make a waterproof base out of coroplast or lino.

Good luck! Can you give me any advice on building a guinea pig cage?
go to this website. It is a VERY roomy cage even if you make the smallest one. you can be creative with it to. I trust this cage completely because the orginization i adpted my guinea pigs at used these cages. It is not very expensive and the piggies have room to roam.

Good Luck!

Sorry I couldn't find the website!

2 x 4 grid (28'; x 56';) recommend for 2 to 3 cavies

2 x 3 grid (28'; x 42';) recommend for 1 to 2 cavies

2 x 2 grid (28'; square) minimum size for 1 cavy
Fun idea but not one that will work as , They have very bad eye sight and will not go up and down stairs out of fear of falling, plus due to the nature of their back it is very dangerous for then if they did fall as they can hurt their self very easily.
Try the cube and coroplast method. It's great and there are lots of variations:
